If you have a family then you will know that trying to get a week or a fortnight’s holiday can be tricky. You’re free time with your children is dictated by the school holidays when the prices are higher and the destinations are busier. A great idea is to maximise your weekends, taking 3 or 4 weekend breaks with the kids each year is a great chance to spend some quality time with the family, here are my top 4 weekend breaks that you and the kids will love.
Euro Disney Paris
A trip to Florida or California for a Disney theme park is huge investment, but fear not as their park in Paris is not only more easily accessible but equally as fun. The park offers 5,000 acres filled with all the fun and magic that a child could wish for with rides, entertainment and of course all of their favourite Disney characters waiting to greet them. Within the grounds of the park are 7 hotels and ranches giving you the perfect opportunity to stay as close to the action as possible, there is even a 9 and 18-hole golf course. On top all of this you can buy your Disneyland Paris tickets online and there are always some great deals for weekend breaks to the park which means it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to give the kids a great weekend getaway.
Windermere is a large lake situated in England’s sprawling lake district in the North West of the country. The backdrop to the lake is a range of mountains and a green, lush, untouched landscape that has for years been the destination for hikers and the inspiration for poets such as William Wordsworth. There are some great little villages around the lake to stay and plenty of pubs and restaurants to relax in. The activities on and around the lake for the kids includes bike rides, walks, canoeing, sailing and swimming, there is plenty here to keep the whole family busy. Windermere looks beautiful on a sunny day, but sadly these are rare so make sure that you pack some warm clothes for your adventure weekend here.
With frequent flights to and from Berlin from almost all of Europe, the city makes for a great weekend getaway destination for the family. The city is steeped in history and interesting culture and just walking around this great city is an experience in itself. For the kids there is also plenty to do with Legoland, a huge play and learn centre call Kindercity and even Berlin’s very own Sea Life Centre. Adults will love the modern architecture and lively vibrancy of the city and the city is relatively inexpensive compared to many large European cities which means that eating and drinking out won’t cost the earth regardless of your family size. Berlin is a safe city and a city that has enough in it to keep the whole family entertained.
Edinburgh is a a perfect city for a weekend break, the city itself is beautiful and there is so much to do for the whole family. Depending on the ages of your children there is a whole host of fun and educational museums such as Camera Obscura, an interactive science museum which everyone will enjoy. A visit to the grand castle is a must and you can go for a coffee in the same cafe where J.K. Rowling wrote the famous Harry Potter books. Accommodation in the city is easy to come by regardless of your price range, the only exception being during the month of August when the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival takes place. Despite the extra expense this would be the perfect time to take your kids as the world of comedy descends on the entire city with street performances and hundreds of shows taking place every day. It doesn’t matter when you take the family to Edinburgh, they will have a wonderful time there, but be warned that if you decide to go in the Winter then you are going to have to take some warm clothes!
