Tips for a Fantastic Hiking Trip

16/05/2013 by Ann Oslo

Hiking trips can be great adventures for both solo travellers and groups. The gorgeous scenery, the freedom, and the escape from reality makes hiking trips one of the sure things you will remember for the rest of your life. The thing about hiking is that it does require a little bit of physical fitness. Although this doesn’t really mean that you should start one of those intense workout programs, you ought to at least be prepared for your trip. Here are some tips on how you can do this:

Workout the three most important body parts for hiking: your leg muscles, your cardiopulmonary system and your feet. There are many ways to go about this aspect of workout depending on your preference. Some choose to run or jog a couple of miles months before their hikes, while others opt for workout programs that can be done at home.

Another important aspect of your training is getting your doctor’s approval. It is wise to go for a check-up to make sure that you are capable of enduring such a challenging physical activity. The last thing you’d want to do is find out later on that you are actually not fit for such an exertion and have to cancel the entire trip.

Next on your to-do list is getting the right gear. Getting this right will ensure that you have a comfortable hike. Comfortable, flexible and water proof footwear such as hiking boots are the best idea. When it comes to clothing, wear comfortable clothing in layers that can be removed or added as needed. Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and a hat.

Other things to include in your list of items: a first aid kit, plenty of water and off course some snacks.

The location of your hike will also have a bearing on the kind of items you need to carry along. Also make sure that you let your friends and family know where you are going and how long you should be expected to be gone.

Hiking trips can be the start of your journey into the world of adventure travel. They are the least taxing physically, are affordable and can be enjoyed by the whole family. Remember to be physically ready for the trip and you will have the time of your life.
