Cold-weather clothing essentials

07/01/2014 by Ann Oslo

Keeping warm

As regular readers will know, I love summer and chilling out in sunny destinations. However, for all those who aren’t chasing the sun and are in somewhat cooler climes, I’ve put together this guide to all of the clothing you will need to keep toasty warm in even the coldest of locations.

Base Layers

In these colder winter months, base layers are essential items if you are heading outdoors. These specially designed garments trap a layer of heat against the skin, giving you added warmth in the harshest of conditions.

Base layers are incredibly versatile but are mainly used during physical activity, like walking or hiking. This is because the specialist fabric aids the evaporation of sweat, preventing you from feeling chilly as a result of having moist material pressed against your skin.

The range of Under Armour cold gear from Marine and Outdoor Clothing is perfect if you are planning a winter getaway, or are simply battling the cold in your home country.

Coat

A coat is an obvious winter essential, but it surprising how many people fail to invest in an effective jacket.

When selecting a coat, it is always wise to go for a thermal, well-insulated one for optimum warmth. Of course, with rain, sleet and snow the winter norm, a waterproof number would be beneficial too.

Also available from Marine and Outdoor Clothing, Helly Hansen jackets encompass all of these key features and are a sound investment that will see you through winter after winter.

Thermal socks

Purchasing a decent pair of boots is undoubtedly a good choice, but wearing them with a thin pair of socks can be ineffective at keeping your feet warm. Picking up a pair of thermal socks is a great alternative.

With a TOG rating of 2.3, Feet Heaters are a great choice. These super-thick socks cushion the foot, keeping you toasty and comfortable. You can buy them from Amazon, but they are also widely available in a variety of high-street stores.
