Berlin is the capital and biggest city of Germany. It is a cultural city, known for its art scene, nightlife and architecture. During your city trip you can use the Berlin WelcomeCard to discover the city in 2, 3 or 5 days. This includes free public transportation (buses and trains) and up to 50% discounts from 190 partners (transportation, activities and sights). The card also contains a city map and detailed information about these partners. So much to see, so little time, What are the sights you definitely can’t miss during your citytrip? Here are some:
The Berlin wall divided the east and west side of the city for almost 30 years. The wall was built by German Democratic Republic (East) during the Cold War. It was intended as a barrier to prevent inhabitants of East Berlin to run off to the west. After days of mass protest, the Berlin wall fell on November 9th 1989. When walking through the city, you can still see parts of the wall. On several tourists locations, it is even possible to buy “parts” of it.
In the center of Germany’s capital, you’ll find the German Reichstag Building. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall – the reunification of East- and West-Berlin – the building is used for the parliament. It is built based on different architectural styles and certainly worth a visit! On the frontispiece you can see the text: “Dem Deutschen Volke”.
Checkpoint Charlie was one of the checkpoints from the Berlin wall during the division of the city. It was the third point and therefore called after the third letter of the NAVO alphabet. You can find Checkpoint Charlie in the Friedrichstraße. Don’t forget to take a picture with the American soldiers posing at the scene.
Brandenburger Gate & Unter den Linden
At the end of the boulevard “Unter den Linden” you’ll find the Brandenburger Gate. It is one of the city’s landmarks and known as the triumphal arch. Brandenburger is the only remaining city gate in Berlin. The monument has suffered a lot during WO II but was renovated after the fall of the Berlin wall. Visit the Brandenburger Gate in the morning to avoid the crowd or when it is dark for a beautiful view.
Berlin is a mixture of old buildings and modern architecture. You will come across the nicest people, Das Berliner Bär and the second biggest shopping centre. This is a city trip you shouldn’t miss!
