8 Characteristics of a Good Sneaker

16/12/2019 by Ann Oslo

Has your favorite pair of Adidas shoes for women now become one of a few discontinued Adidas shoes? If so, then you are now left with little recourse but to search out a new pair of comfortable sneakers. However, what are the most essential qualities of a shoe? Is it the support, the durability or a mix of things? Unfortunately, while shoe comfort is a highly individualized experience, there are at least eight characteristics that make a sneaker exceptional, and every shoe should have a good balance of each.

1. Support

The first thing you should consider when searching through Asics clearance shoes and other brands is how much support does the pair offer. There should be enough support around the ankle to help prevent rolling or other common injuries. While some casual shoes do not provide this type of support, you need it in any athletic shoe or sneaker as they are often used for walking, running and other physical activities.

2. Protection and Functionality

Next, you want to look for a shoe that offers the protection and functionality you need. For example, while a pair of tennis shoes that are breathable in the summer months is ideal, if you are looking to be active in the winter months, then too much breathability can lead to icicles forming on your toes.

3. Flexibility

In a sneaker, you are also looking for flexibility. A stiff shoe does not allow the proper give and bounce-back that you need when performing active duties. Stiff, hard and rugged shoes are great for the assembly line or construction site, but not for runners or sports enthusiasts.

4. Traction

As an active person searching for the right shoe to fit your lifestyle, you will want to pay close attention to the soles. Traction is necessary for running and walking with minimal risk of injury, especially in rainy and snowy months of the year. Make sure to find a pair of sneakers with a good rubber sole.

5. Stability

Next, stability. While it may sound the same as support, it is not. Stability has to do with the fit of the shoe’s interior. For example, are you flat-footed, or do you have high arches? Each foot type needs different arch support, and without it, you risk possible injury because your foot is not stable within the shoe, leading to strain, over or under pronation and even joint and back pain.

6. Size

Size is a priority when getting athletic shoes, like sneakers. Shoes that are too big don’t provide stability, and shoes that are too small might injure the wearer. When trying on shoes, you should have approximately a half-inch between the end of the shoe and your longest toe. This distance allows for movement without injury.

7. Cushion

Comfort is important. If you are going to be running, then a shoe with more cushion is better. If walking, then less cushion will suffice.

8. Durability

Last, look for a shoe comprised of durable materials. Fabrics, like leather, and rubber soles provide longevity, which is vital to maximizing the lifespan of your new shoes.

While no foot is the same, the above characteristics should help guide you to a good fit for you. Go out and try a few pairs on, and consider what you need in your shoes.
