4 Tips To Experience Lisbon Like A Local

09/10/2016 by Ann Oslo

Lisbon

Lisbon has fast become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Its soaring temperatures and vibrant history has made it popular with travelers from all over the globe. However, for those who are still more interested in getting authentic local feel for the city, there’s still plenty on offer that will allow you to experience this wonderful destination like a true Portuguese native.

Find a Fado Night

Often cited as the soul of Portuguese music, Fado is a traditional genre that has been around in the country for centuries. Although now less prolific in many cities, Lisbon is still a thriving hotspot for the music, whose performers reside mainly in quaint bars, cafés and restaurants.

The combination of voice and guitar makes spending time around the music a haunting and soulful experience, and one that many locals – particularly older residents – prefer over more conventional night time entertainment. Experiencing one of these performances will allow you to feel like a real Lisboan.

Try the Beers

Drinking culture is rife in Portugal, but unlike the alcohol-fuelled resorts of the Spanish islands, it’s a much more upmarket and refined experience. The local beers are the pride of the native people, and most bars and shops will stock them in great supply.

Super Bock is by far the most popular brand, and can be found all over the city, with its main competitor, Sagres, following close behind. Many locals will spend their summer evenings, sat at al fresco cafés and bars, enjoying the cool and crisp taste of these local delights. Following in their footsteps will not only make you feel like a native, but will act as a catalyst to get you chatting to Lisbon residents – who are famously warm and friendly people to spend time with.

Embrace Football Culture

Portugal has produced some of the world’s greatest football players over the years and, with its capital city home to two of the country’s best teams, its no surprise that the love of the beautiful game in Lisbon is at an all time high. Most Portuguese cherish the game so sentimentally that, on match days, you can’t seem to escape the infectious atmosphere.

To really experience this joy, book a ticket to watch one of the games at the notorious Estádio da Luz, which has the greatest capacity of any sporting venue in the country. If you don’t fancy spending a day pitch-side, many bars around the city air the matches, and the environment is equally vivacious.

Visit The Cinema

Slowly, but surely, Portuguese cinema is gaining traction on the world stage, and with locals as well. Producing many of their own films, as well as showcasing foreign productions, Lisbon is the country’s capital for the big screen. Home to a plethora of different festivals, including the world-famous Lisbon Film Festival, you can easily escape the generic tourist trails at one of these illustrious events.

Similarly, the local cinemas showcase the best of the country’s home-grown productions, with some highlights of this year including ‘Jogo de Damas’ and the up and coming ‘Cartas da Guerra’, whose official release date is currently waiting to be announced.

Lisbon is a city that’s brimming with life and culture, and it’s easy to find ways to get off the beaten track and experience the local delights hidden within its winding streets. So what are you waiting for? Pack up, jet off and embrace your inner-Portuguese today!
